Frequently Asked Questions About Metal Roofing

Metal Roofing FAQs | Mansea Metal - iStock-1145254175_(1)Whether you’re installing a roof on a new home or are interested in upgrading your existing residential roof, selecting the right roofing material is an important decision. If you’re curious about metal roofing, the professionals at Mansea Metal have compiled some of the most commonly asked questions. Let’s get you the answers you need before you order your new and improved roofing system.

Are Metal Roofs Noisy When It Rains?

In all honesty, they can be. When metal roofs are installed on pole barns, garages, and industrial buildings, they can intensify the sound of rain and hail. This is primarily due to the fact that these particular structures don’t often contain insulation or underlayment. But, when a metal roof is installed on a residential property, the noise is reduced significantly. The layers of building materials between the roof and the living area of your home work together to block out noise.

To put it simply, a metal roof installation will not affect the sound quality you experience when in your house.

Do Metal Roofs Rust?

There are a lot of different types of metals, like steel, copper, and aluminum, that are used in creating metal roofing materials. But only metals that contain iron, like steel, can rust. Since aluminum is naturally rust-resistant, durable, lightweight, and the most common metal roofing material, your metal roof is most likely not prone to rusting.

To help increase the chances of rust prevention on roofs that don’t have an aluminum coating, steel roofs are galvanized. This means it’s coated with a layer of zinc oxide to make it rust-resistant.

At Mansea Metal, we use Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL Coil Coatings. This coating is designed to maintain extreme resistance to abrasion, chipping, and marring with tremendous color and gloss retention. If you have additional questions about our metal roof coating, please contact a Mansea Metal location near you.

Can You Attach Solar Panels To a Metal Roof?

Yes! Metal roofs are ideally compatible with solar panels and are the top choice among roofing contractors for such a job. Since solar panels are incredibly heavy, they require a surface that can withstand the weight. Metal roofs are extremely durable, allowing them to support multiple solar panels without damaging the roof structure.

Just as you can install solar panels on a metal roof, you can also install a skylight as well. Read more about skylight installation in our previous blog post.

How Long Does a Metal Roof Last?

Metal roofs are durable and long-standing. When cared for properly, metal roofs can last anywhere from 40 to 70 years. To put that into perspective, a traditional asphalt roof is only estimated to last between 12 and 20 years.

Is a Metal Roof Environmentally Friendly?

Yes, it is, and thank you for asking! It’s natural for us to want to recycle bottles and cans, utilize reusable bags at the grocery store, and limit our environmental footprint, but it can be difficult to understand how your home also plays a factor. Now, homeowners are able to continue their path toward sustainable living by installing a metal roof.

When a metal roof comes to the end of its life cycle, which is measured in decades, not years, they are 100% recyclable. In contrast, asphalt shingles contribute to 11 million tons of landfill waste each year. Additionally, metal roofs reflect heat up and away from your home, contributing to reducing HVAC bills by up to 25%

How Many Colors Do You Have to Choose From?

When choosing a color for your metal roof, it’s important to understand how these colors will affect sunlight and heat. Naturally, lighter colors will reflect the heat of the sun much more effectively than darker colors will. With that said, Mansea Metal offers 22 weather-resistant colors for homeowners to choose from. That means you can go as classic with a black or brown metal roof or go bold with an orange or red.

If you’re unsure about which color best suits your home’s aesthetic, we’ve got you covered. We offer a color visualizer for you to gain a better understanding of what your home could look like with a new metal roof! Simply select a photo that looks similar to your home, choose what area of the building (roof, siding, trim, and wainscoting) you’d like to change, and select your desired color. It’s like a dressing room, but better!

The Mansea Metal Difference

We Are The Manufacturer

Most of the companies who advertise metal roofing and siding or post-frame buildings are simply reselling products produced by someone else. We produce our own products from rolled steel and have large indoor yards that keep our lumber protected. That way, we control the quality and time of delivery to you. And that creates jobs right here in your home town.

Higher Quality Steel with Superior Finishes

The truth is not all steel is alike, especially when it comes to finishes. That’s why we use Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL™ Coil Coatings. Created to withstand most anything that comes its way, designed to maintain extreme resistance to abrasion, chipping and marring with tremendous color and gloss retention. And you get to select your favorites from more than 22 striking color options

You Won’t Be Shorted On Lumber

When we price a building package, we give you everything you need to ensure structural integrity. Like longer gable posts that extend to the top of the truss, not just tying in at the bottom. And long-lasting pressure-treated wood measuring .60 CCA. You won’t get this quality at a ‘big box’ store. Plus, we use 6x6’s along with 2x10’s and 2x12’s that are #1 grade.
